“I received not one, but two, calls from your teacher today.” She was using that scary calm voice, the one where you wish your parents would just yell. She was furious; Kole could see it written clearly across her face. Her finger was still tapping rhythmically on the table as her eyes bored a hole into him.

“Not one, two calls, Kole.” He felt his face pale, and he started to sweat a little. He knew he shouldn’t have hidden away all day. He knew that his mother wouldn’t understand. Adults don’t really understand the troubles children face. So why did he do it then?

“First, I found out that you were given a detention for skipping class all day. A detention, Kole, on your very first day at your new school.” He went and sat down next to his mum. He was terrified, but he felt if he didn’t sit, all the blood would leave his head and he’d pass out. Passing out, while being told off, didn't seem like a good idea.

“Do you want to be known as a troublemaker? Hmm? Do you want to be the kid that teachers always think did something wrong? Hmm? The kid who always gets blamed? Hmm?”

Kole knew not to interrupt her. It was no use trying to explain. You couldn’t argue with an angry parent – that would have been dumber than hiding all day at school. It was better to just answer her questions with a shake of his head.

“Then don’t do such stupid things, Kole. You’re smarter than that. I know it, you know it, and your teacher knows it already too.”

Kole shrunk into the chair. How was it that adults could make children feel so small?

“I got two calls today from your teacher, Kole. You can thank him for making the second call tomorrow.” Kole’s eyes lit up a bit; he was confused now. Was he in trouble or not?

“He seems quite impressed with you, despite the dumb choices you made today.” She sniffled a bit. Was she trying not to cry? “He explained your side of the story and I have to say, that Alice seems like a little brat.”

Kole couldn’t help but choke out a laugh. He could think of some better words than brat, but he was already in enough trouble as it were.

“She is.”

“Mr Bower assures me he’ll be talking to her tomorrow and that you’ve learned your lesson. Have you?”

Kole just nodded his head, and his mum pulled him in for a hug.

“Good, cause even though you embarrassed me – and believe you me, this was incredibly embarrassing, Kole – I didn’t want to ground you for getting picked on at school.”

She pulled away from him and her eyes, just like his, were blinking back tears.

“If you ever do something so bone-headed, so stupid, so braid-dead again, I’ll probably have to ground you until you turn eighty!”

They both laughed at that and hugged each other tightly.

“Now let’s eat some pizza! It’s not getting any warmer
